Savory Tater Tot Casserole
Working on our homestead can be very time consuming. There are days when if you’re not careful you can actually forget to eat, as crazy as that may sound! So, on those types of days I like to cook quick filling foods. One of my favorite go to meals is this savory tater tot casserole.
What makes this dish so easy and yummy is that it pulls together really fast. You can simplify this down to just four ingredients and build from there if you have it. The base four ingredients include beef, tater tots, cream of mushroom and seasoning. Even though this is an extremely simple combo, trust me when I tell you it is so delicious .
It doesn’t matter how tired I am, or how limited my time may be, I am always able to whip this meal together without much thought process.
Easy Cooking Process
First, you want to brown your meat with your seasonings. I like adding Lipton’s Beefy Onion Soup or Onion Soup mix . You can throw in fresh onion or minced onion, then salt and pepper to taste. Once your meat is browned you can then go ahead and drain the oil off.
The next step is to add that into your casserole dish. I love using the KOOV casserole bakeware set that comes with a 7-inch, 10-inch, and a 12-inch dish. Another great casserole dish option for easy leftover storage is to use glass casserole dishes with plastic lid covers.
Next, top with cream of mushroom. And then finish with a layer of tater tots.
Pop it in the oven at 350 degrees, until your tater tots are golden brown and thoroughly heated. For extra crispy tater tots you can use the remaining five minutes on broil to crisp them up.
All in all you can have this to eat within 25 to 30 minutes! Have you tried this recipe? Leave your thoughts or tips & tricks in the comments, I’d love to hear!
Tater Tot Casserole
PoohIngredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- salt and pepper to taste (salt optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon crazy janes mix-up seasoning, or adobo (optional)
- 1 pkg beefy onion soup mix
- 1 pkg frozen tator tots (32 oz. bag)
- 1 can condesnsed cream of mushroom soup (22.6 oz)
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef with onions. Drain excess fat.
- Add garlic powder and choice seasonings. If you choose to simply salt and pepper to taste and omit janes seasoning mix or adobo, that's okay. Also, if you choose to add optional mixes and omit the salt, that works as well. The point here is to season to your liking.
- Add beef broth and beefy onion soup mix.
- Cook until everything is throughly heated.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly over the bottom of a 2 quart casserole dish.
- Pour condensed mushroom soup over the top of beef mixture. Spread evenly.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of cheese over soup.
- Add frozen tator tots on top. You can pour the entire bag on top and spread evenly across dish, or you can line up tator tots one by one until the top is covered.
- Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese on top of tator tots.
- Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes until cheese is bubbly. Broil dish for the last 5 minutes if you want crispy tater tots!
